Sand Dunes

Sand dunes form between the shrub zone and the beach. Older stabilized dunes called secondary dunes usually exist between the shrub zone and the newer, usually higher, less stable primary dunes. A sand dune forms wherever sand blown by the wind can be trapped by plants and debris. Wind velocities of 12 miles per hour or greater are capable of moving fine, dried beach sand.

The sand is allowed to blow, creating a blowout area where no vegetation was available to hold it down. Most of the dunes on the lakeshore areas are simply seas of parabolic dunes, as shown below.

Sand Dune Facts

Sand dunes are hills of sand that are made by winds as they blow across deserts. The more powerful a wind is, the farther it can carry particles of sand before they drop to the ground. As they roll and bounce on the ground, these particles create small, waveshaped ripples of sand. These ripples can build up into larger structures, called dunes.
